Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Fair trade practices refer to the ethical trade standards that ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and environmental sustainability for workers and producers, especially in developing regions. In Babura Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, many local artisans, farmers, and producers engage in trade but often face challenges such as limited market access, low prices, and exploitation by middlemen. Digital media, particularly social media and e-commerce platforms, has the potential to address these challenges by promoting awareness of fair trade practices, connecting producers with global markets, and educating consumers about the importance of supporting ethical trade. This study aims to assess the impact of digital media on promoting fair trade practices in Babura LGA, examining how these platforms are being used to raise awareness, improve market access, and support sustainable trade practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing importance of fair trade, many producers in Babura LGA still struggle with low bargaining power, lack of visibility, and exploitation in traditional trade systems. Although digital media offers a powerful tool to counteract these challenges, its role in promoting fair trade practices in the region remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate the impact of digital media on promoting fair trade practices in Babura, focusing on its role in raising awareness, improving market linkages, and fostering sustainable economic development.
